Otor Ogor, Ughelli, Ogor Community Town Hall

The first Quarter NAS Medical Mission was held in Otor Ogor township, Ughelli North Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State on Friday, 2nd November 2018. It was flagged off by the Chief Operations Officer of the Association – Mr. Chiemeka Ozumba (NAS First Mate), who was supported by the Chief Programmes Officer – Mr Bart Akelemor (NAS Second Mate) and the Medical Officer of Health of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Dr. Johnson Uyovwiesevwa. The occasion was graced by the traditional leader of the community, His Royal Majesty Okiemute Onajite Igere 1, the Ovie of Ogor.

The NAS medical mission in Ogor afforded NAS/PC the opportunity of meeting some of the medical needs of the community by using the vast human resources of the organization in diagnosing and treating of common ailment, as well as promoting healthy lifestyle with health promotion talks. It also provided a platform for the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency the opportunity of delivering other maternal and child survival interventions especially immunization of children as the mission was done in Partnership with the Agency.

Advocacy & Social Mobilization:

Advocacy and scoping mission was carried out to the Traditional Leader of the community and with support of the Ovie of Ogor, the Ogor Community Town Hall was provided for the mission. The Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency was also contacted and approved the Ughelli North Local Government Area Primary Healthcare team to partner with NAS to carry out the mission. Social mobilisation and announcements about the mission were made round the Ogor community using the community-based approach – town announcers and churches provided by the Traditional Leader and the Social Mobilization committee of the LGA.

Implementation:

This medical mission was implemented in partnership with the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency that deployed nurses from the LGA Primary Healthcare team. NAS made use of the medical and allied health professionals (doctors, pharmacists and Laboratory Scientist) within its rank for the mission.

Implementation of the medical mission started as early 08:30Hrs with Health Talks delivered by the Health Educator and team supported by the NAS team of medical personnel. Registration and screening desks were set up and manned by nurses that screened and triaged the clients by observing their vital signs prior to assigning them to the Consulting Doctors. Crowd controllers were used to manage the crowd for orderliness.

In addition to the treatment rendered to the children, immunization session for all antigens were undertaken by the LGA immunization team and it afforded the children the opportunity to catch up with their missed antigens. Also, a mini measles campaign was carried out for all the children between 9 months and 59 months as the community previously experienced cases suspected of measles. Rapid diagnostics and screening for blood sugar level were carried out by the Laboratory Scientists to aid diagnosis.

Prescribed medication and drugs were dispensed by a Pharmacy Technician.

The Q1 NAS Medical Mission was concluded at about 17:00Hrs.

Summary of Clients seen:

The Ogor community has an estimated resident population of 4000 – 5000 people and it is made up of four settlements of Otor Ogor, Oviri Ogor, Edjekota and Owhodokpokpor. The community is served by a Primary Health Care centre at Otor Ogor.

The total number of registered clients who were seen and treated during the mission is 297.
